A variable frequency drive (VFD) is a type of motor control device that drives an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage of its power source. The VFD motor also has the ability to control the increase and slope of the motor during startup or stop, respectively.
Although the drive motor controls the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to the motor, we often refer to this as speed control, because the result is an adjustment of the motor's speed.
