What is a Load Binder?

Also known as a chain binder, it’s a device used to tighten chains to secure cargo for shipment. There are two types of load binders: ratchet, and lever.

Ratchet – This binder uses a ratchet mechanism to create tension in the chain. It has a ratchet handle and two tension hooks on each end. Because it doesn’t store much energy in the handle, there is less risk of the bar recoiling or snapping, making the ratchet binder a safer option over the lever binder.

Lever- The lever binder features a tension hook on each and uses leverage to tighten the chain and secure cargo. Because of their simple design, they are easy to install, however, more energy is stored in the handle, requiring more strength to tighten. To help make tightening easier, people often use cheater bars, which can be dangerous and are not recommended.

Both binders work similarly, and it’s up to the user to pick one based on their comfort level.

Chain Size for Load Binders

For tie-down applications, you can choose between two main grades of chain.

  • Grade 43 high test chain – used for cargo that is stationary and not being transported.
  • Grade 70 transport chain – for cargo being shipped on a flatbed or other moving vehicle.

Different grades of equipment chain have different load limits. Both ratchet and lever binders may use either grade 43 or grade 70 chains depending on their application. For easy identification, check the load binder’s handle for recommended size, break strength, and working load limit.

Hook Options for Transport Chain

The three common hook types used with grade 70 transport chain are:

  • Clevis Grab- Designed with a shallow throat opening to allow the chain to slip through the hook.
  • Clevis Slip – Also known as a slip hook, has a wider throat than the clevis grab hook.
  • Clevis Slip with Safety Latch – features a safety latch to keep the chain in place.
