History

Rototherm is proud of its rich and prestigious heritage. Since 1847, the full story of Rototherm is one of people, places and products that reflect our core values of integrity, quality, commitment and innovation.

Sydney Smith Dennis of Nottingham invents and patents the world's first steam pressure gauge. He worked together with George Stephenson to measure the pressure on the 'rocket' steam locomotive.

 

Rototherm invents the bi-metallic thermometer and formally establishes under British Rototherm brand in 1934. It soon moves into a new factory in Merton Abbey, South West London.

 

Rototherm becomes the go-to brand for thermometers and grows rapidly across the UK.

 

The company continues to expand and searches for a larger facility to accommodate future growth. It moves into a new factory located near Port Talbot in South Wales.

 

Rototherm sees an opportunity within the mechanical recorder market and acquires the product line from Negretti & Zambra. The business continues to build on this product range to become a dominant player especially within the pressure testing market due to its reputation for reliability, durability and accuracy.

 

Acquired Kent Industrial Measurements (ABB) mechanical recorders & thermometers product range.

 

The business sees an opportunity to establish a regional presence in Ireland and acquires Bentley Instruments, a leading instrumentation supplier in the market. This quickly becomes one of Rototherm's key market.

 

To strengthen its footprint within the pressure gauge market and defence industry, Rototherm acquires UK based SSD, a key player within the defence, naval and oil & gas market. Rototherm's pressure gauge business sales grow rapidly throughout UK, Middle East and Asia.

 

Rototherm acquires Thermocouple Instruments Limited, one of UK's leading manufacturers of temperature assemblies and primary flow elements, and RTD Products, one of the world's leading manufacturers of RTD ceramic wire wound elements.

 

Rototherm is taken over by an ambitious management team with the vision to develop Rototherm into a global leader in instrumentation products and services. The new shareholders immediately begin an investment program to strengthen the Group foundations, such as implementation of a world class ERP system.

Rototherm Group acquires HNL Engineering Limited, a leader in the manufacture of temperature and pressure switches, and manifolds, as part of the company's strategy to add complementary products to its portfolio.

 

In order to strengthen the Group's technology capabilities, Rototherm Group acquires Canongate Technology Limited, a world leader in non-invasive level and liquid concentration measurement through ultra-sonic technology. This also strengthen the company's presence within the beverage market, where Canongate is a dominant player.

Rototherm goes 'lean', and starts initiatives for production optimisation.

 

Rototherm establishes Rototherm Australia Pty Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary in Perth Australia, to supply and service the Australian market for instrumentation where the Group already has a good market presence.

 

In order to build a strong service presence and provide better after-sales support, Rototherm acquires IRPCO Instrumentation Limited, a dominant instrumentation service provider and Eurotherm partner for South West UK.

 

Rototherm Singapore Pte Ltd. Established in 2014, Rototherm Singapore is the regional sales and service office for Asia Region for the Group. With a strong installation and customer base across the Region, Rototherm Singapore aims to provide the exceptional service our customers demand and provide them with a partner they can rely on locally.

 

Rototherm Inc. is established in Houston in 2017. Rototherm Inc. is the regional sales and service office for North and Latin America. With a strong installation and customer base across the Region, Rototherm Inc. aims to provide the exceptional service our customers demand and provide them with a partner they can rely on locally.

 

Rototherm acquires Digitron, a well-established company that has been designing and manufacturing instrumentation for over 40 years and is a leading supplier of instrumentation and monitoring solutions to industries worldwide. Digitron's range of products includes simple-to-use handheld thermometers, pressure meters and data loggers through to state-of-the art wireless temperature monitoring solution – helping customers to meet safety requirements and manage their HACCP programme.
