A HISTORY OF INNOVATION

An idea that transformed into a global enterprise

THE ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY COMPANY

The Electric Storage Battery Company, which would one day become Exide Technologies, was founded by W.W. Gibbs in 1888. Gibbs, an executive at a prominent Gas company, saw the potential of electricity as a source of lighting, and set out on his own. He purchased the patents of Clement Payen, a French inventor who advanced electrical storage, and began transforming those ideas into reliable commercial products.

A RICH HISTORY OF POWERING THE WORLD

W.W. Gibbs’ intuition was correct. Electrical storage was set to play a bigger role in society — far bigger than he originally imagined. As transportation technology — and the energy storage capabilities it required — advanced, Exide evolved with it. Exide batteries were present when Commander Byrd established an American military base in Antarctica. Exide batteries powered wakeless torpedoes in World War II and stored the solar energy that charged NASA’s first lunar landing module. By 1987, the company’s product line was capable of powering practically every vehicle on American roads.

POWERING THE FUTURE

For more than 130 years, Exide has been a global provider of stored electrical-energy solutions. We produce energy storage systems and specialty applications for the Transportation, Network Power and Motive Power markets and industries including agricultural, automotive, electric, light and heavy-duty truck, marine, materials handling, military, mining, power-sport, railroad, security, telecommunications, utility and uninterruptible power supply (UPS), among others. As one of the world’s largest secondary recyclers, the company is committed to environmental sustainability.

1888

W.W. Gibbs founds Exide's predecessor company, the Electric Storage Battery Company. After acquiring patents to make the storage battery a commercial product, the batteries were marketed towards electric fighting companies.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Our commitment to battery recycling and environmental responsibility is unwavering. That’s why we are one of the largest secondary recyclers in the world, and one of the few companies with the ability to provide Total Battery Management, also known as closed loop recycling. That process frees customers from the burden of handling spent batteries in their own facilities.

Recycling recovers 99% of all lead received at our recycling centers. Every year we recycle millions of pounds of lead and recover and neutralize millions of gallons of sulfuric acid.  Our robust, highly controlled recycling process is a critical part of our global commitment to environmental sustainability.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Recycling, sustainability and the environment are integral parts of Exide’s strategy and culture.

Association of European Automotive and Industrial Battery Manufacturers

EUROBAT is the association for the European manufacturers of automotive, industrial and energy storage batteries. EUROBAT has 53 members from across the continent comprising more than 90% of the automotive and industrial battery industry in Europe. The members and staff work with all stakeholders, such as battery users, governmental organisations and media, to develop new battery solutions in areas of hybrid and electro-mobility as well as grid flexibility and renewable energy storage.

International Lead Association

The International Lead Association (ILA) is an organization dedicated to serving lead producers and other companies that have a direct interest in lead and its use. ILA provides a mix of technical, scientific and communications support from staff and specialist consultants including chemists, electrochemists, toxicologists and environmental specialists.

INDUSTRY STANDARDS

All manufacturing and recycling plants operate under a formal EHS Management System (EHSMS), which includes permitting and licensing schemes and management of various legal and other requirements. Monitoring and management of various key performance indicators (KPIs) ensures effective control of aquatic and atmospheric emissions and waste. In addition to the schemes which satisfy normative, legislative and permitting requirements, Exide operates under internal standards that define minimum requirements for our operations, which adheres to, or goes beyond, legal compliance. In addition, the company has implemented a Management Systems approach that conforms to ISO requirements and is included in the scope of our stringent internal auditing scheme. The Exide EHS Management System has been satisfactorily demonstrated to external ISO certifying bodies with 60-percent of Exide’s manufacturing locations globally being certified to ISO 14001:2004/15, ISO 50001:2011, OHSAS 18001:2007 or a combination of the three.
