​The Emergence Of Public Education

The first education system appeared in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by establishing the Directorate of Education in 1344 AH (1926 CE), and it served as a foundation for the education system for boys.

In the year 1346 AH (1928 AD), a decision was issued to form the first council of knowledge to establish an educational system that supervises education in the Hijaz region. Instruction is in the whole kingdom, and it included 323 schools, where it started with four schools.

In the year 1371 AH (1952 AD), the Ministry of Education was established during the reign of King Saud bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. It was an extension and development of the Knowledge Directorate, and it was entrusted with planning and supervising public education for boys in its three stages (primary - intermediate - secondary). King Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz was the first minister.

In 1379 AH (1959 AD), the General Presidency for Girls’ Education was established during the reign of King Saud bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud​, with 15 primary schools and one​ intermediate teachers ’institute, headed by Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Nasser Al-Rasheed.

With the development of education, a royal decree was issued to include the General Presidency for Girls’ Education in the Ministry of Education in 1423 AH (2003 CE). Dr. Khader al-Qurashi was appointed as Deputy Minister of Education for Girls ’Education. After a year, the name of the Ministry of Education was transferred to the Ministry of Education.

The Emergence Of Higher Education

 

The Ministry of Higher Education was established by Royal Decree No. 236/1 in 5/8/1395 AH (1975 AD) to undertake the implementation of the Kingdom's policy in higher education. With this decision, the Minister of Higher Education is responsible for implementing its system in university education.

University education has received generous support represented in establishing new universities, scientific and applied for colleges. Huge financial allocations in the budgets, as the number of universities in the Kingdom, has reached twenty-five government universities, nine private universities, and 34 private colleges that contain scientific and applied specializations in various fields, and the Ministry has also adopted Higher education modern trends in scientific research and future planning.

Merging The Ministries Of Education And Higher Education Into One Ministry

To improve educational outcomes, develop curricula, reduce the gap between public education and higher education, and achieve coherence, harmony, and complementarity between them, in a way that reflects positively on improving educational outcomes, in line with the requirements of the labor market, uniting efforts and investing energies, competencies, and capabilities in the two ministries, the order of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz was issued on Rabi 'Al-Thane 9, 1436 AH, corresponding to January 30, 2015 AD, to merge the Ministries of Education and Higher Education into one ministry under the name (Ministry of Education).
